So you’re on your plane ride home, taking the occasional nap or peacefully reading a book, when suddenly it happens… Something most people dread in the middle of an 8-hour flight.
A baby starts to cry.
Now, as with most circumstances that are sonically annoying to others, I am instantly excited to have the opportunity to capture a sound that evokes such an emotional response. And there are very few circumstances as emotional as a baby whaling at the top of its lungs at 36,000ft.
This is one of those instances where having a portable recorder really pays off. As soon as this baby started to cry, I was able to bust out the recorder and grab this recording before the baby grew tired and ceased its bout of crying. I highly encourage all field recordists to always be armed with a portable recorder with fully charged batteries. A large portion of sound effects in my personal collection came from spontaneous moments like the baby crying; brief and very difficult (or sometimes impossible) to recreate.
